The teen idol of the 50s who saved his twin boys in the mysterious plane

Ricky Nelson, born Eric Hilliard Nelson in 1940, became one of America’s first teen idols after growing up in the spotlight on his parents’ sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. At 17, his performance of “I’m Walking” on the show launched a music career that produced hits like Poor Little Fool, Travelin’ Man, and Garden Party. In 1963, he married Kristin Harmon, and together they had four children. Despite a lifelong fear of flying, Nelson toured extensively throughout the 1960s and beyond.

Tragically, on December 31, 1985, he died in a plane fire en route to a Dallas concert. Just days earlier, he told his twin sons Matthew and Gunnar not to join him on the flight—an eerie premonition that saved their lives. While the cause of the fire remains uncertain, his family believes a faulty gasoline heater was to blame.

Nelson’s children later carried on his musical legacy, often calling their careers a tribute to their father. His story remains one of early stardom, lasting influence, and a twist of fate that spared the next generation.
