My brother Noah and I arrived at Mom’s house unannounced, birthday gifts in hand, expecting smiles and celebration. Mom cried happy tears as everyone shouted, “Surprise!” Rick put his arm around her and said, “I’ve been planning this for months.” Turns out, all his strange behavior the secrecy, the tracking, the nervousness had been to keep this one big surprise under wraps. He wasn’t controlling; he was just trying to give her something unforgettable.

As the night went on, I watched Mom laugh, dance, and beam with joy. Rick had even prepared a photo slideshow that brought everyone to tears. I realized how wrong I’d been.
